on the rocks??? well I've not applied any "special" effects, just done a massive boost of contrast but thats about it. Ive tried to look at it in greater detail, but im not sure what you mean by gloqing/burning on the rocks :s sorry
I wasn't accusing you of using Photoshop to make up for the lack of photographing skills; I apologize if that's what it sounded like. Your works are awesome. It's just that when people DO alter their photo, nine times out of ten, I prefer the unedited version to the edited one. There are too many over-edited photos on deviantart these days, you know?
yeah I know exactly what you mean, When I do make any alterations I keep things simple and only do things that you would have been able to do in a proper dark room, like alter contrast and brightness and, to a degree, colour. Sometimes I find that the shadow highlight filter works well but only in moderation. Occasionally I do some dodging and burning, but I do try and keep the picture as true to form as it was in my minds eye when taking the photo.
A photo never truly represents the scene as the eye sees, but I do try my best to make it as true to my minds eye.
I totally agree that many photographs are mutilated beyond what a photo should be, but then people shouldnt call them photographs, they are photomanips at best and graphic art at worst but people try to pass stuff of as a photograph when really its nothing like a photograph.
I have a passion for the "special light" that can make a scene special. If the light is not special then I don't take the photo.
Yeah, I agree with the "alter the photo only to make it closer to what you saw with your eyes" view. It is the most logical school of thoughts regarding the issue IMO and produces the most beautiful results. (Unless you're actually going for a photomanip, but that's something entirely different...)
